TERÉZVAROSI BOLHAPIAC, flea market in an old flat

Reading about flea markets in Budapest I found out Terézvarosi Bolhapiac, located in an old flat in the center of the city, so I went to check it! I was surprised because even it has a centric location, it was not easy to find: after walking around looking for the entrance, finally I found it going into the italian restaurant in the corner of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky and Dessewffy streets, passing through the door on the left, and going upstairs to the first floor...

The market is different than all the other I had ever been. It used to be offices and houses,  so nowadays vendors are selling all kind of stuff in each of the light rooms: books, glasses, typewriters, dinner sets, vintage and retro objects, clothes and all the things you can find in a flea market... Get ready to bargain!!

Leyendo acerca de mercados de pulgas en Budapest encontré el Terézvarosi Bolhapiac situado en un piso en el centro de la ciudad, así que fui a ver de que se trataba. Me quedé sorprendida de que a pesar de estar tan céntrico, no me resultara fácil de encontrar! Después de dar un par de vueltas, al fin encontré la entrada en la esquina de la calle Dessewffy con Bajcsy-Zsilinszky, entrando en el restaurante italiano, pasando la puerta de la izquierda y subiendo las escaleras hasta el primer piso...

Es un mercado diferente a los otros que había visto anteriormente. Antiguamente en esta planta del edificio habían habido oficinas y pisos, de manera que hoy los vendedores exponen todo tipo de cosas en cada una de las luminosas habitaciones: libros, gafas, máquinas de escribir, vajillas, objetos y ropa retro y vintage, y todas esas cosas que puedas imaginar encontrar en un mercado de pulgas... Prepárate para regatear!!

EGER, wine and mountains

One of the best weekends getaways I've done since I'm in Hungary has been to visit Eger. We strolled around this colorful city, enjoyed an amazing wine tasting and climbed the Bükk Hills under wonderful orange trees... 

Una de las mejores escapadas que hemos hecho des de que llegamos a Hungría ha sido, sin duda, Eger. Nos dejamos llevar por los coloridos callejones, disfrutamos de una increible degustación de vinos y paseamos debajo de los árboles naranjas de las montañas Bükk.

Get to know the city:

Eger has a historic city center with many beautiful preserved Baroque buildings and peaceful streets to walk around. Start from Dobó István square, the most centric point, then, visit the Basilica and admire the 40m Turkish Minaret. To walk along the ramble is really pleasant and  you can go into the central market and feel the local Eger's life. Afterwards, climb the fortress, visit the Castle, and enjoy the best panoramic view of the city!

Eger tiene un centro histórico repleto de preciosos edificios Barrocos bien conservados y calles tranquilas para pasear. Puedes comezar a conocer la ciudad desde el punto más céntrico, la plaza Dobó István, luego visita la Basilica, y admira el Minarete, de 40 m de altura. Camina por la rambla y entra en el mercado central para disfrutar de la vida local de la ciudad. Después, sigue el camino de la fortaleza, visita el Castillo, y disfruta de las mejores vistas de la ciudad!

Szépasszonyvölgy: best wine tasting!

To wine lovers' delight, go to Szepasszonyvölgy and enjoy a full range of wines will be such a unique experience. About 20 wine cellars, over 400 years old, are carved directly into the mountains, an exceptional techique to keep the wine at correct temperatures until it reaches full maturity. Cellars are all very different one from another, but all of them are gorgeous and they offer prices between 80ft and 400ft for a glass of wine... you won't be able to pick just one! 

Para el deleite de los amantes del vino, ir a Szepasszonyvölgy y saborear una completa gama de vinos será una experiencia única. Alrededor de 20 bodegas de 400 años de antigüe-dad están esculpidas directamente en la montaña, una técnica excepcional para mantener el vino a una temperatura correcta hasta alcanzar su madurez. Cada bodega es diferente de la otra, pero todas ellas son maravillosas y ofrecen copas de vino por precios entre 80ft y 400ft... querrás descubrirlas todas!

Bükki Nemzeti Park

If you go to Eger you must climb the Bükk Hills; an hourly bus departs from the city to the Bükki Nemzatei Park. Once there, we took the red train that goes up the hill, we climbed the mountain until reach the cave and had picnic under the trees... I just can say that the day we spent there was wonderful!!

Si vas a Eger tienes que pasear por las montañas Bükk; un bus sale cada hora desde la ciudad hacia el parque Bükki Nemzatei. Una vez ahí, tomamos el tren rojo que nos llevó hasta una explanada, luego subimos la montaña hasta llegar a una cueva y comimos descansando debajo de los árboles... Solo puedo decir que fue un día increible!

GETTING THERE. CÓMO LLEGAR:

Train: 2.20h. Ticket: 2600ft (50% discount students). There are trains every hour that connect Budapest (Nyugati Keleti Station, M2 metro line) with Eger. Check MÁV-START.

Bus: 2h. Buses depart twice an hour from Stadion autóbusz-pályaudvar (Puskás Ferenc stadion, M2 metro line). Check VOLANBUS

Car: 1.40h. Take the M3 and then continue on route 25, and drive from Miskolc through the roads of the Bükk mountains.

SZABAD AZ Á..., courtyard and basement

If walking around Budapest during the night (and day!) you bump into any open door, don't hesitate to enter!! This is my advice. For sure there will be exciting, different and amazing locals and courtyards behind... And Szabad az Á is not an exception! As soon as we went into this place, i new that it would worth a post.

Si paseando por Budapest durante la noche (y día!) encuentras cualquier puerta abierta en planta baja, no dudes en entrar! Esta es mi recomendación. Seguro que detrás encontrarás locales y patios interiores sorprentes, diferentes e increibles... y Szabad az Á no es una excepción!! Tan pronto como entré en el local, supe que merecía un post.

Passing through the big wooden door, a tunnel full of graffitis took us to the courtyard of the building (it's also a hostel!), the heart of the ruin pub. The atmosphere was friendly and rather quiet, people chating around the big fire and laying down on the usual old furnishing. However, we had been once here in summer, and i can say that as soon as Budapest will get  warmer, this is going to be full of young people dancing and drinking under the trees.


Al acceder por la gran puerta de madera, un túnel lleno de graffitis nos llevó hasta el patio interior del edificio (es también un hostal!), el corazón del ruin pub. El ambiente era amistoso y bastante tranquilo, con gente riendo alrededor de una fogata y sentada en esos viejos sofás y sillas a los que este tipo de locales nos tienen acostumbrados. Sin embargo, ya había estado aquí en verano, y puedo asegurar que en cuanto llegue el calor, estará lleno de gente bailando y bebiendo bajo los árboles al ritmo de la música.

Passing the courtyard, we let ourself be carried along the painted walls to end up in a crowded basement. I really loved that small vaulted concert hall with extravagant furniture and a little stage at the bottom. We spent such a good time there, the bands and the music they played were awesome... so i'm already checking for the next concert!

Atravesamos el patio, nos dejamos llevar por los dibujos y pinturas en la pared, y llegamos a un sótano lleno de gente. La pequeña sala de conciertos con toda esa decoración tan extravagante y el pequeño escenario al final me encantó. Los grupos que tocaban eran increibles así que disfrutamos de una gran noche. Ya estoy mirando para el siguiente concierto!!

SZIMPLA KÁVÉZÓ, coffe and concerts

To bring you up to speed, on August 14th, 2011, was the first day of a great adventure with Silvia, my new flatmate; our Erasmus in Budapest started! Got home, there wasn't internet, so we decided to go down to a bar. Without expectations, just in search of wifi... And voilà! Just there we had a Szimpla Kávézó.

Para situaros en contexto, el 14 de agosto de 2011, fue el primer día de una nueva aventura junto con Sílvia, mi nueva compañera de piso; empieza nuestro Erasmus en Budapest! Llegamos a casa, no había internet y decidimos bajar al bar de abajo. Sin expectativas, solo en busca de conexión... Y voilà! ahí teníamos un tal Szimpla Kávézó.

From the street, i got carried away by the melody of a piano and we entered into the local. The dark stock timber, the worn out walls with projected images, its extravagant furniture and the music was everything a surprise for me and my first exciting moment of the trip. Are we going to discover more places like this one? After that day we found out that Szimpla Kávézó is the youngest brother of Szimpla Kert (most popular ruin-pub in Budapest), and that this kind of surprises would never end all over the year...

Des de la calle, nos dejamos llevar por la melodía de un piano y entramos en el local. El suelo de parque oscuro, las paredes desgastadas con imagenes proyectadas, su mobiliaro extravagante y la música, hicieron de ese momento mi primera gran emoción y sorpresa del viaje. ¿Habrán más locales así? Después nos enteraríamos que éste es el hermano pequeño de Szimpla Kert, el ruin-pub más popular de Budapest, y que esas sorpresas nunca cesarían a lo largo del año...

Upon entering the cafe, the high ceiling is really pleasant and the atmosphere amazing. Going upstairs, there is a small  cozy mezzanine, and downstairs there is a basement perfect to hang out and chat, decorated with retro style lamps, great furniture, and notes on the walls (don't forget to write down yours!).Szimpla is great to have a coffe or tea, and it also has an extensive nightly program with events, activities and concerts that worth to take a look!!

Al entrar, el local tiene una agradable doble altura y subiendo las escaleras hay un pequeño altillo de lo más acogedor, y abajo, una sala perfecta para conversar y decorada con lámparas retro, mobiliario variado y notas en la pared (no olvides la tuya!). Szimpla no solo es genial para tomar un café o te, también tiene un extenso programa nocturno de eventos, actividades y conciertos al que vale la pena echarle un vistazo!!

ESZTERGOM, border of Slovakia

Without a doubt, one of the towns in Budapest surroundings that worth a visit for its beauty, landscape, and the architectural and cultural interest is Esztergom. This town is located on the bank of the Danube in the border of Slovakia, 50 km away from the capital, and nowadays its population is around 30.000. Esztergom is known because has had a very imporant role in the hungarian history due to the fact of being the first Empire's capital of this country.

Sin duda, una de las poblaciones de los alrededores de Budapest que vale la pena visitar  por su belleza, paisaje, e interés arquitectónico y cultural es Esztergom. Situada en la orilla del Danubio, a 50 km de la capital, y haciendo frontera con Eslovaquia, esta población de unos 30.000 habitantes ha tenido un papel de gran relevancia en la historia de Hungría por haber sido la primera capital del Reino de este país.

 

MUST SEE. QUÉ VER:

Maria Valeria Bridge: One of the best things to do in Esztergom is crossing the bridge by walk towards the left bank of the river to change country and getting in Sturovo, a small Slovakian town. Though it's not a very touristic city, it's nice to have a walk or lunch there, and just great for the fact of being able to be in another country by crossing the Danube. Views from the bridge are gorgeous!! El Puente Maria Valeria. Uno de los imprescindibles en Esztergom es cruzar el puente a pie y cambiar de país, llegando a Sturovo, una población Eslovaca. Aunque no es una ciudad muy turística, es ideal para dar un paseo o ir a comer, y genial por el hecho de  ser capaz de poner el pie en otro país cruzando el Danubio. Las vistas des del puente son maravillosas!!

The Basílica: Is the biggest church and tallest building in the country and the 18th biggest church in the world with its 118m long, 45m wide and 100m high. In adittion, this neoclasical basilica seems even bigger because of being sitting on a small hilltop and surrounded by Esztergom's tiny houses. Walk up the cupola to admire the best city views from the top of the Basilica. La Basilica es la Iglesia más grande y alta del país y la dieciochoava más grande del mundo con sus 118m de largo, 45m de ancho y 100 de altura. De estilo neoclásico, la basílica aún parece mayor por estar situada en una colina y rodeada por las pequeñas casa del pueblo. Sube a la cúpula para disfrutar de las mejores vistas de la ciudad.

Former Royal Palace: has been reconstructed and now homes a museum. Worth a visit to see also the outside of the Palace, with sections of the fortified walls. El antiguo Palacio Real ha sido reconstruido y ahora alberga un museo. Merece la pena ver los alrededores del Palacio y los restos de la muralla.

Vizivaros: stroll around this colourful district walking through narrow streets between barroque churches and buildings along the bank of the river. Pasea por este colorido barrio de calles estrechas y Iglesias y edificios barrocos situado a lo largo de la orilla del río.

Kis-Duna: have a pleasant walk between leafy tress and mansions near the small-Danube (kis-duna), that actually separates the land of the town from the island itself. Walk along this path until Széchenyi square, full of historical buildings. Date un paseo agradable entre árboles frondosos y mansiones a lo largo del pequeño-Danubio (kis-duna), que separa la isla de las tierras del pueblo. Camina hasta llegar a la plaza Széchenyi, lleno de edificos históricos.

GETTING THERE. CÓMO LLEGAR:

Train: 1.30h. Ticket: 1250ft (50% discount students). There are trains every hour that connect Budapest (Nyugati Station, M3 metro line) with Esztergom. Check MÁV-START.

Bus: 1.15h. Ticket: 800ft. Buses depart from Árpád Bride Station (M3, blue metro line) every 20 min, you can buy the ticket in the station. Check VOLANBUS

Boat: 4h. Ticket: 2990ft. Nice way to go to Esztergom, pleasant and relaxing trip stopping in Visegrad and Szentendre. It works from May to October. Check MAHART.

Car: 1h. Take the road number 10 from Budapest following the Danube.
